Both the Volvo FM and FH models have received five star safety ratings in the first ever round of EuroNCAP testing of heavy duty trucks.
Renault’s T Series and Scania’s G Series trucks were the next best placed with four stars each.
The NCAP – or European New Car Assessment Programme – has been a benchmark in vehicle safety since in Europe since 1997, with the 2024 instalment expanding tests to include heavy-duty trucks.
Following months of stringent testing, the organisation rated a total of 10 trucks on a scale of one to five across three main categories, safe driving, crash avoidance and post-crash safety.
Volvo’s FH and FM both received the top rating of five stars, with the FM having the best overall test result of all trucks tested.
The Volvo FM and the Volvo FH Aero scored a City Safe award, which the ENCAP testers bestowed on trucks they deemed to be well suited for city work.

Euro NCAP’s five-star rating means that Volvo has shown excellent performance on criteria such as driver support and collision avoidance, delivering traffic safety for the driver and surrounding road users. Additionally, both Volvo models fulfil the City Safe criteria, thanks to good vision and good performance of Volvo’s active safety systems, designed to protect vulnerable road users in city traffic situations.
“This is proof of our consistent efforts in safety developments to go beyond what is required by legislation, towards our vision of zero accidents involving our trucks,” Volvo Trucks Traffic and Product Safety Director Anna Wrige Berling says.
“Euro NCAP ratings will guide customers in their purchase decisions as well as challenge vehicle manufacturers to continuously work to improve safety.”
On the Renault side, it was awarded four stars for its Trucks T model, placing it in the upper echelon of trucks for safety. Renault is part of the Volvo Group of companies.
