It has been a mammoth 24 hours in Australian politics and Kevin Rudd has taken the top spot away from Australia’s first woman Prime Minister Julia Gillard in a 45 to 57 leadership ballot in the Australian Labor Party Caucus.
Mr Rudd has been sworn in again as Prime Minister almost three years to the day since he was ousted from the job by Ms Gillard.
Six senior Ministers have also resigned however Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has added another title behind his name, Deputy Prime Minister.
Governor-General Quentin Bryce formally commissioned Anthony Albanese as the new Deputy Prime Minister and Chris Bowen as Treasurer, following Wayne Swan’s resignation last night.
The election date however has been put in doubt. The poll set by Ms Gillard for September 14 may be altered for an early election.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has challenged the new Prime Minister to name the election date and make it soon.
