In this video, Johno from the popular ‘Road Train Adventures’ channel showcases one of the favourite sounds of every Australian truckie – the revs of a Cummins EGR engine.
He’s taking his rig from Muchea in WA down into Perth proper, with the video showcasing a full drive. You can hear every noise, from the key turning in the ignition to getting up to 100km/h on the freeway all the way to the end of the trip.
EGR, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation, engines reduce the NOx emissions by re-circulating a portion of the exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders, depriving it of certain amount of oxygen. This drops the combustion temperature within the engine.
New Cummins X15 engines use this technique, as well as the majority of its modern range.
