Repeal dysfunctional RSRT as road toll reduces

Now is the time for Parliament to repeal the Road Safety Remuneration Act (RSRT), according to NatRoad. The recently published road death statistics show a continuing drop in the number of fatalities associated with heavy vehicles on the road, as released by the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE).

As a result, the RSRA is no longer needed, says NatRoad as the association steps up its call to the Federal Government to dissolve the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal, which it describes as dysfunctional.

The BITRE report states, “Over the last decade, annual deaths from crashes involving a heavy vehicle decreased by 32.7 per cent, from 281 to 189. The estimated trend is a reduction of 3.2 per cent per year. When standardised by the number of vehicle registrations over the last decade, the rates for articulated truck involvement and heavy rigid truck involvement show average declines of 6.8 per cent per annum and 4.1 per cent per annum respectively.”

NatRoad also points to the current government plans to invest in infrastructure creating safer and more productive roads across urban and regional Australia. The $50 billion to be spent will be a major contributor to ongoing improvements in road safety, according to NatRoad.
