Rego rise discussions

The calculations have been done and the National Transport Commission has released the proposed heavy vehicle registration charges, to come in later this year. The NTC annually recalculates the charges using a seven year average for both road expenditure and vehicle numbers.

According to the calculations published by the NTC, the latest set of road expenditure figures show a 2.4 per cent increase in the heavy vehicle cost base (from $2,954.8 billion to $3,025.7 billion).

The calculations are said to mean the road user charge should rise 0.6 per cent in order to recover the additional expenditure attributable to heavy vehicles in accordance with the annual adjustment formula.

Therefore, the NTC is seeking comment on its recommendation that the minister implement a 0.6 per cent increase in the charge, increasing it by 0.16 cents per litre to 26.3 cents per litre, from 1 July 2015.

The proposal is available online at the NTC website.

Comments are called for and to make an online submission visit the NTC homepage and select ‘Make a submission to the NTC’ from the submissions menu.

The NTC says, where possible, submissions should provide evidence, such as data and documentation, to support views.
