The National Truck Accident Research Centre (NTARC) has launched a suite of resources to improve safety for heavy vehicle drivers navigating steep descents.
The online platform has been created in collaboration with NTI, the National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP) and the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) and provide vital knowledge for all drivers to reduce risks and prevent crashes.
Recognising the hazards posed by mountainous roads across Australia, the initiative includes practical video guides and written materials designed to boost driver confidence and skill.
The resources, which can be accessed free of charge from the NTARC website, cover essential general driving techniques and provide location-specific guidance for challenging routes such as the Cunningham’s Gap in Queensland, Mount Ousley in NSW, and South Australia’s South-Eastern Freeway.
More resources will be added in due course.
Each guide emphasises preparation, awareness, and control to ensure drivers can “get down safely, every time”.
