Following the retirement of the Australian Trucking Association’s current CEO, Michael Deegan, a new CEO has been announced.

The current Executive Director of the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association, Mathew Munro has been confirmed to take over as the new CEO of the ATA. He will begin his time at the industry peak body on July 3 2023.

ATA Chair, David Smith says he has really enjoyed working with Michael over the past two years and is sad to see him go, and he says he’s looking forward to a smooth transition.

“Mat will bring so much experience to the role and will build on Michael’s great work,” said David. “I look forward to joining forces with Mat as we tackle industry issues together.”

Mathew has worked for more than 25 years in contested public policy across industry and government, including with two ATA member associations: Executive Director of the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA) and Policy Director with the National Road Transport Operators Association (NatRoad).

Mathew’s experience as ED at the ALRTA will be invaluable to him in this new role. The make up of the ALRTA, which predates the formation of the ATA by some years, was the model for the formation of the ATA, back in 1990. Independent associations from the states and territories are the members of the national associations, not individual transport operators.

Although the structure of the ATA is more complex than the ALRTA, the same principle of organisational structure applies. The ATA represents the collective view from a number of disparate member associations to the federal government and the world in general, while also being the national peak body driving research and change for the industry as a whole.

Mat has also worked with the Grains Council of Australia; Real Estate Institute of Australia; and with government at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARES) and the ACT Government Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services.

He holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science, graduate qualifications in Applied Science, and a Master of Business Administration.
