An additional 59 routes have been announced for use by heavy vehicles in South Australia, with the new routes now able to be viewed live on RAVnet.
Of these routes, 55 are for the grain harvest as either new routes or routes upgraded from Commodity Class to General Freight.
Mark Elford from South Australia’s Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure said the additional routes will mean improved road safety and fewer trucks on the road during the busy grain harvest period.
“Traditionally, the grain harvest sees high numbers of heavy vehicles on the roads at a time which coincides with the summer months and holiday season,” he said. “The creation of these additional routes will decrease the amount of trucks on the road, making travel easier for all road users.
“The routes will also make silo and bunker access and destocking more convenient for trucks.
“The quality and safety of the routes have been assessed to ensure they are a great addition to the existing catalogue of authorised routes for heavy vehicles.
“Close consultation between local councils and peak grain industry bodies has meant the routes are appropriately mapped.”
Elford also stressed that while the new routes are largely concerned with the grain harvest, other industries will also benefit.
“There is a new Commodity route at Lucindale for the logging industry and a new General Freight route at Mindarie for the mining industry,” he said. “Two new General Freight routes have also been mapped at Payneham and Port Augusta for Schweppes and Boral Pavers.”
