The latest innovation for the trucking industry is the release of the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) new heavy-duty diesel engine oil category; CK-4 and FA-4.

Ten years ago, API introduced CJ-4, paving the way for a change in the heavy-duty trucking segment. It has taken a step further with the establishment of two new heavy duty diesel engine oil specifications; CK-4 and FA-4. Designed to help vehicles meet more stringent emissions and fuel efficiency standards, these oil specifications are considered the new industry benchmark for commercial vehicle lubricants.

Representing an upgrade from API CJ-4 oils, the new API CK-4 version of both Mobil Delvac 1 ™  ESP 5W-40 and Mobil Delvac ™ MX ESP 15W-40 helps improve oxidation resistance, shear stability and aeration support, hence improving engine durability. The two products also maintain traditional high temperature/high shear (HTHS) viscosity and provide performance benefits exceeding today’s API CJ-4 engine oils while retaining backward compatibility to satisfy older engines makes. Despite sharing similar benefits, the two products are distinctively different from each other in terms of their recommended use of applications and operating environments.

The API FA-4 oils, are of lower HTHS viscosity and provide enhanced fuel efficiency for newer engines and not expected to be required in our market place until the end of 2018.

ExxonMobil have been actively involved in the development of the specification, with a number of technical experts holding chair positions on the Diesel Engine Oil Advisory Panel and the T-13 Test Development Taskforce. ExxonMobil has extensively field tested their API CK-4 and API FA-4 formulations in over 200 trucks, accumulating more than 50 million miles of testing data as of June 2017. Over 1.5 million miles are added each month with the help of select fleet partners. The formulations’ performance have proven to surpass the previous API CJ-4 formulations.

With such outstanding credentials, ExxonMobil continues to lead the industry by helping owner operators and fleet managers embrace change and adopt these new lubricant specifications to meet future emissions standards. With the help of your Mobil Delvac ™ lubricant expert and ExxonMobil’s Optimised Oil Drain Interval (ODI) Process, we can help you make sure that you get the most out of your equipment.
