Australia’s mining and emergency services among others now have access to an Isuzu four-wheel-drive truck that is easier to operate for long distances over difficult terrain.
That’s because the FTS 800 4×4 model can now be optioned with a five-speed Allison automatic transmission which allows drivers to devote their full attention to negotiating demanding off road terrain.
The FTS 800 4×4 Auto is available in six iterations comprising standard or crew cab variants including power take-off equipped versions.
Specially designed for use in light and medium-duty trucks, the five-speed Allison enhances the FTS 800’s ease of use and reduces driver fatigue in demanding conditions. The transmission communicates and integrates with other systems in the truck via CanBUS technology, providing seamless operation and smooth shift quality.
Other features include a ‘first-gear hold’ function incorporating torque converter lock-up and full exhaust brake actuation to further enhance the model’s off-road capability by ensuring maximum engine braking during steep descents.
Consistent with other FTS 800 4×4 models, the automatic variant features a full-time four-wheel-drive system with centre differential lock and has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 13.9 tonnes.
Coupled with Isuzu’s EuroV and EEV-compliant SiTEC Series III 235 engine dispensing 176 kW of power at 2400 rpm and 706 Nm of torque between 1450 and 2400 rpm, the package is ideally suited to extreme applications including emergency service, mining, exploration and utilities applications.
To enhance the truck’s safety and comfort, the ECE-R29 (crashworthy certification) compliant cab comes standard with an ISRI 6860 suspended driver’s seat with pneumatic lumbar support and automatic weight adjustment. All models also feature a driver’s airbag and front under-run protection. Furthermore, the standard cab has an ADR42 compliant sleeper.
Other comfort and convenience features include a radio/CD multimedia unit with a 4.8 inch (122 mm) LCD touch screen. At an additional cost, the multimedia unit can be equipped with genuine Isuzu satellite navigation by Navteq that displays truck and 4×4 routes and mapping data supplied on an SD card.
