Introducing the Most Powerful Engine in Australia

Volvo is introducing the most powerful engine in Australia yet, with its 780hp D17 engine set to arrive locally after a successful trial in Sweden.

The D17 will be available in new FH16 models from July this year with the full D17 powertrain included. They will be available at ratings between 600hp and the most powerful 780hp.

The increased horsepower also comes with an increase in torque. The 600hp variant now offers 3000Nm of torque, while the 700hp offers 3400Nm, and the range topping 780hp option brings 3800Nm.

While the 17-litre, Euro 6 D17 engine shares similar general composition to the 16-litre engine, the extra capacity comes from an increase in cylinder bore, or greater diameter.

The new engine also includes a new fuel injection system, low friction cylinder liners as well as wave top pistons to ensure optimised combustion. All power ratings will be compatible with hydrotreated vegetable oil.

“A world of possibilities has been built into this engine platform,” says Volvo Group Australia director of product and performance Shayne Commons.

“Highly efficient drive trains capable of using alternative fuels will be a key part of our path to net zero emissions.

“More power gives us the option of gearing our trucks for more efficiency on highway, more torque means less gear changes and more top gear time.

“However, for the person behind the wheel, the performance of the D17 engine in the new FH16 will impress, driver feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive, especially in regard to holding road speed in undulating terrain. Drivers will want to drive this FH16.”
