Following in the Footsteps of his Father

Simon Russell has been transporting livestock for Maloney Livestock Transport since July 2019, following in the footsteps of his father who was a professional truck driver and the driving force behind his passion for the heavy vehicle industry today.

After finishing school and with the strong support of long-standing local Tamworth livestock carriers Mick Maloney and Keith Nelson, Simon gained significant experience not only behind the wheel but across all facets of the industry.

Obtaining his MC licence in 2019 Simon was swiftly put to work at Maloney Livestock Transport and continues to be a trusted and respected member of the team.

Described as a rare find in the industry, Simon is regarded for his good stockman-ship and dogman-ship skills as well as for his initiative and willingness to develop greater knowledge to give back to industry.

When Simon is not transporting livestock in his B-double from his home base in Tamworth, he is busy designing and constructing customised scale trucks, trailers, and equipment.

Simon has been nominated, as one of the latest batch of young achievers, for the Livestock, Bulk and Rural Carriers Association of NSW Young Driver of the Year Award, sponsored by SafeWork NSW, to highlight outstanding dedication and commitment by young heavy vehicle drivers aged between 21-35 years to driving and safety.

The Award plays an important role in encouraging and promoting the positive achievements of young drivers as well as showcasing the livestock, bulk, and rural heavy vehicle transport sector as a viable and rewarding career choice.

Inaugural recipient of the Award and the current Award Chair Reggie Sutton said the LBRCA is proud to be developing our future leaders.

“Young people are the key to Australia’s transport industry future, and we must encourage and inspire them to share their perspectives and solutions now,” says Reggie.

“I congratulate each of the finalists and wish them the best of luck on Friday 27 May 2022 when a winner is announced in conjunction with the LBRCA annual conference in Wagga.”

The winner will be awarded an industry study tour to the value of $5,000 to America, New Zealand or Western Australia, represent LBRCA young drivers and be a safety ambassador for Safework NSW.
