DP World trials Caltex biodiesel blends

Global container terminal operator DP World will use Caltex biodiesel blends at its West Swanson terminal as part of efforts to reduce the Port of Melbourne’s carbon footprint.

Under a three-month trial announced recently, Caltex will supply its B20 product – 20 percent biodiesel blended with 80 percent diesel – to DP World for refuelling eight new-generation diesel-electric straddle carriers now being introduced at the terminal.

At the end of the trial the two groups will consider expanding the use of the B20 product to refuel DP World’s complete straddle carrier fleet at the terminal.

The West Swanson Terminal – which currently uses an estimated 500,000 litres of diesel fuel a month – is one of several DP World sites around Australia now being supplied by Caltex.

“DP World joins a growing number of leading transport, mining, industrial and reseller clients choosing Caltex to supply this fuel made with renewable biodiesel to power its vehicles and equipment,” said Caltex national manager marketing services, Michael Ridley-Smith. “Biodiesel also has greatly reduced carbon dioxide emissions over the full product lifecycle, which includes the growing of feedstock like soybeans, through to processing for use as a fuel. B20 blends also reduce particulate matter, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide exhaust emissions.

“Another benefit of a good quality biodiesel blend is the added lubrication that it provides, which can help to reduce wear on engine parts and fuel pumps.”

Caltex introduced biodiesel blends to its suite of fuel products in 2003 and remains the largest seller of the product in Australia, with B5 (containing five percent biodiesel) and B20 blends available in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and shortly, Perth.
