DIESEL’s Editor Steve Brooks gets the “First Drive” of Volvo’s new FH16 700 in Australia. Watch the movie!

With huge shoes to fill, the new FH is unquestionably the most important development from Volvo in decades and its impact on the Swedish giant’s future will be great. Time and toil will ultimately decide how great but in this first drive outside Europe, STEVE BROOKS steers an FH16 700 with BRIAN WEATHERLEY DIESEL’s European correspondent pulling a B-triple set and finds a smart truck with plenty of early positives.

Diesel Sep-Oct 13_Volvo_Page_1Brian Weatherley DIESEL’s European correspondent is also the UK representative on the judging panel of Europe’s prestigious ‘Truck of the Year’ award, is founder of a hugely popular blog site called ‘Biglorryblog’, and more recently, front man for a series of highly professional film productions called ‘Brian’s Truck Report’.

Brian and Editor Steve Brooks spent a couple of days together in the cab of the FH16 700 pulling a B-triple set tracked by a film crew. As well as being the lead story on the September – October 2013 DIESEL Magazine the episode has been translated to nine different languages and you can watch it now!

The adage ‘if it can survive in Australia, then it can survive anywhere’ certainly seems to have been a core value in Volvo’s test program for the new truck. Still, Australia obviously wasn’t the only test base for the reborn FH but as Volvo Group Australia chief Arne Knaben explained during a pre-launch press conference, Australian test trucks covered more mileage than any other test area in the world, including Scandinavia.

Ultimately though, time and toil will determine the true success of the new FH. In the meantime, there’s plenty to ponder especially on a road trip with two elder transport  journalists.
