Cleanaway Waste Management is stepping up as a key player in Australia’s transition to low-emission transport.
It has signed an agreement with Viva Energy to produce renewable diesel from used cooking oil.
Under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Cleanaway will supply purified used cooking oil from its Laverton treatment facility to Viva Energy’s Geelong Refinery, where it will be co-processed with crude oil to create renewable diesel and other low-carbon products.
The move supports Cleanaway’s push to reduce emissions across its own fleet of 4,100+ heavy vehicles, while also offering a practical clean fuel option for other operators in hard-to-abate sectors.
“We’re closing the loop, turning local waste into a valuable, low-carbon fuel that can power the same trucks collecting it,” said Frank Lintvelt, Executive GM Strategy & M&A at Cleanaway.
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Net Zero and Future Made in Australia agendas, but industry leaders are calling for policy recognition to unlock its full potential, particularly under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme (NGERS).
With proven technology, an established supply chain, and a strong industry partner in Viva Energy, Cleanaway is showing how waste management can lead the charge toward cleaner, circular transport solutions.
