Slowly Slowly Catchee Monkey

It is a phrase dating from the bad old days of British colonialism, but ‘Slowly Slowly Catchee Monkey’ is also how trucking rules reform seems to be travelling. The latest changes announced by the

Wheelie Quick Isuzu

This is a wheelie quick Isuzu truck pulling off an incredible stunt back in a 1980s TV advert for the Japanese market. No wonder the Isuzu brand has been number one for so long here in Australia, no other truck can wheelie like this. Diesel News is still trying to figure out how they achieved this in the days before CGI and all of the other electronic magic.

Where to Now for International?

With the reintroduction of the International brand, it probably time to ask the question, where to now for International? The first models unveiled this year are variations on the ProStar models. Let’s assume the ProStar hits the spot for International, the brand is welcomed back into the open arms of Australian truck buyers and proves to be an effective addition to the offering for the Iveco brands and its dealers. Of course, this is by no means a foregone conclusion, but it is also feasible. International does still have a loyal fan base among the trucking community, the brand remains strong.

Looking for More Power

As we have seen for many years, the truck market is always looking for more power in its trucks. The desire to have just a bit more oomph every time a truck is replaced doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. As a result, we have seen a new engine from Hino appear as an option in the heavier end of the new 500 range. In fact, both engines now available are new to Australia. The existing eight-litre engine has been modernised as the Hino J08E. It is rated at 280hp (206kW) at 2,500rpm and puts out an increased torque level at 883Nm (651 ft lb), an increase of seven per cent on its predecessor.

Sensible Car Drivers?

Is it too much to ask for the trucking industry to be able to deal with sensible car drivers? The biggest risk to safety on our highways is those people driving cars. They are the least observant, most likely to speed and prone to fatigue-related crashes, especially around holiday time. Car drivers are the bane of the truckie’s life, lacking any kind of consideration for truck drivers and manoeuvring dangerously around them. If there is one thing we need to fix to improve road safety it is the standard of car driving. The biggest problem is the lack of knowledge in the car driving community about trucks, the way they perform and what they can and cannot do. Car drivers tend to exhibit fear around trucks and will tend to panic if the truck does anything they don’t understand.
