The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has released a revised Directional Stability Under Braking (DSUB) standard for the PBS scheme.
This comes after the peak body released its final Consultation Paper for the revised DSUB Technical Standard and implementation late last year.
In November 2019, DSUB updates were agreed to by state ministers following a PBS review project.
These latest updates to the PBS’s DSUB standards are set to come into effect from 1 July 2026.
A major update to the PBS scheme is that new VINs entering the scheme for the first time will not comply with the DSUB standard by fitting Load Proportioning Valves.
Furthermore, Trailer Electronic Braking Systems (TEBS) will become the new norm for PBS trailers, including dollies and heavy combinations will require full electronic braking control lines, while voltage must be sufficient to power all TEBS units.
The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has welcomed the changes from the initial proposal, which aimed to enhance braking stability and overall road safety for heavy vehicle combinations.
Key recommendations from the ATA include:
- Clear guidance on status lights for brake units, ensuring compliance without conflicting with ADR lighting rules.
- An ADR version table to simplify certification requirements for 2026–2030.
- A practical checklist for documentation and in-service upgrades, streamlining compliance verification.
These measures will help operators transition smoothly while maintaining the PBS scheme’s reputation for innovation and safety, the ATA said.
