A new heavy-duty hydrogen truck has been tested in China, scoping out the potential for the alternative fuel source to replace combustion engines.
The truck was powered by ‘Track 1000’ system – a 100-kilogram liquid hydrogen system – to enable a driving range of over 1000 kilometres without needing to refuel.

It was developed by the 101st Institute of the Sixth Academy of Chinese Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) and integrated with an FAW Jiefang heavy truck.
While China is currently a global player in the battery-electric vehicle space, this test marks the nation’s first independently developed 100kg-class onboard liquid hydrogen system. Local media has glowingly labelled it as “the pinnacle of technology”.
A third-party observer confirmed the system’s aerospace-grade cryogenic insulation with less than three per cent evaporation and a hydrogen storage density of 10 per cent.
The next steps for the vehicle are to further optimise the configuration for more efficient use of space, and further progression in limiting evaporation rates.
The Track 1000 technology was initially unveiled in 2024.
